Saskatoon man to sow seeds of stability in Zimbabwe

SASKATOON — A $25,000 contribution from Canadians could help plant seeds of stability in Zimbabwe.

Saskatoon organizer Don Kossick is working with the Saskatchewan Zimbabwe Committee and Food for the Hungry Canada to raise funds to send a shipment of seeds to the African nation, which has been hard hit by an unstable government and a crippled economy.

More than one million packages of the seeds are waiting in a warehouse in New Orleans, and can be sent to Zimbabwe at no cost to farmers if the group comes up with $25,000 for shipping. They will then be distributed to rural co-operative farm groups.

"Saskatchewan people know what it means to have seed in the ground," Kossick said. "If you get seed, that means the community grows. You'll have food security and you'll have sustenance."

Kossick has until the end of the month to raise the remaining two-thirds of the money needed.
